What's that You Say?

Having problems with your bench?

Need a quarterback for the second unit?

Maybe some offensive firepower?

I'm listening.

Now That Should have Counted for Four

Play Antoine behind Perk and have him stand out here where he's takes the shot in this video. That ought to spread the floor.

Employee #8 Hits Buzzer Beater to Down Fakers

Right result. Green Win. Purple lose.

The jersey number is available.

He's only 32-years-old.

So what's Danny waiting for?

Brian Scalabrine or Antoine Walker:

Hmmm. Let me think about this for a minute.

Wait. I can make this even easier. Cut POB. If there ain't no hope of using him this year, why waste the roster space? Don't use Cassell's roster spot, cuz I want him backing up Rondo once we start rearchitecting the second unit.

Above I joked about playing AW behind Perk. Think about it, though. Antoine is taller than Powe or Davis. He's a better passer, and his rebounding skills are at least comparable.

Can you spell 10-Day contract?

AN-TOINE, AN-TOINE

Sign the dude to a 10-day contract. At least invite him in for a work out.

The entire bench accounted for 1 assist in 50 minutes last night.

Give me a break.

Chicken or the Egg?

Doc wants to rest the starters, but the bench doesn't produce.

Or is the bench not producing because they aren't getting any PT?

It's tempting to say that the bench just stinks. But if it does, then it also stinks in getting Leon Powe shot opportunities, because he had -0- field goal attempts for the second time on the trip. Not wholly unrelated, the Celtics bench had 1 assist. Overall the bench was -26 in 50 minutes of play.

Let me check my notes.

The bench needs a big with some length.

The bench needs a wing who can score and defend.

The bench needs a quarterback, preferably a point guard.

Funny what happens when PJ Brown retires, James Posey jumps ship, and Sam Cassell is forced into coaching.

Auerbach on Starbury

"You don't worry too much about other teams," says Auerbach. "He may be upgrading the Knicks on paper but it may be affecting the chemistry. You don't know if (Penny) Hardaway and Marbury are going to have a real effect on (Allan) Houston. So instead of being a better team, they may be worse. You don't know. You don't win on paper. Marbury is a great, great player; still, you've got to win it out on the court."

Anatomy of a 27-2 Start

At some point later this year, historical revisionists will reconsider the Celtics 27-2 start. Depending on how we are doing at that point in time, the reviews will be more or less positive. The LA Times appears to be getting a head start on the process.

Before things get too out of hand and the Celtics are considered not just a flawed team that started the season 27-2, but also an overrated team that will struggle to get past one round in the playoffs, let's take a closer look at the facts.

Danny Ferry: Executive of the Year in Waiting

When the Cavs got past the Pistons in the Eastern Conference Finals two years ago, the general consensus was that one player--LeBron James--had singlehandedly defeated an entire team. Regardless of where you fall on that debate, no one is arguing that now.

Danny Ferry has assembled himself a championship contender, a team no less deep as the Los Angeles Lakers, only the Cavs bring it on the defensive end every night. The Cavs are the league's stingiest defense in terms of points allowed, giving up only 89.1 points per game, while scoring more than 101 points per game. Cleveland bests Boston on both fronts (see next post). Cleveland also boasts an undefeated record at home.

The Cavs are a tall team, too. James is 6'8, Ben Wallace is 6'9" Z is 7'3," Anderson Varejao is 6'11," Delonte West is 6'3, and just for fun they have 6'7" wing Sasha Pavlovic, 6'7" wing Wally Szczerbiak, and 6'9" big J.J. Hickson on the bench. Oh, let's not forget 6'11" Lorenzen Wright is on the payroll as well.

Of course, height doesn't win or lose games by itself. Talent does, and you can only play five guys at a time. Speaking of PT, James is the only Cav averaging more than 33 minutes per game. So not only are the Cavs a gaudy 26-4, they are a well-rested 26-4.

Joe Smith has openly talked about returning to the Cavs if he's bought out. Danny Ferry may not have a need for him, but you can bet that if the Cavs are the only thing preventing Smith from wearing Celtic green, Ferry would welcome Smith back with open arms.

Act II of the NBA season should be an interesting one to watch in the Eastern Conference.

Portland

A big win against a bad team. That's what Sunday's win over the Sacramento Kings represented. A truer measure of where the Celtics are at will be tonight night against Portland. The Blazers are 11-3 at home, but only 5-5 over their last 10 games. So the Celtics will be playing in a hostile arena against a hungry team.

I say good.

The 1987 team was notorious for getting our hopes up, demolishing bad teams one night only to lose on the road the next. The 1987 Celtics started the season with a 120-102 win over the Bullets, and then turned around and lost to the Bucks the next night. The game after that the green demolished Indiana by 30, and then turned around and lost to the Nets by four later that week.

Winning a game or two by 20 or more points, then, really isn't a sign of health, unless the Celtics mix in a few wins against good teams. Both Brandon Roy and Greg Oden are questionable for tonight's game.

Since Portland sans those two is still no worse than Golden State, the Celtics have no gimme tonight, even if they both sit.

Giddens Sits, Walker Produces

Iowa 107, Utah 101

DES MOINES, Iowa, Dec. 28, 2008 - Courtney Sims erupted for a season-high 36 points and 16 rebounds Sunday as the Iowa Energy rallied for their third straight win, a 107-101 victory over the Utah Flash.

Sims made 13-of-18 shots and 10-of-11 free throws as he surpassed his previous high of 34 in a win at Fort Wayne on December 5. He had seven offensive boards as his total fell one shy of his season high at Sioux Falls on November 28.

Despite Sims' huge game, the Energy trailed, 77-76, entering the final period. Sims took over by scoring 13 points in the fourth quarter, including a follow shot and alley-oop dunk that gave Iowa the lead for good at 89-86 with 7:03 to play.

Othyus Jeffers had 17 points and 11 rebounds, Phoenix Suns assignee Alando Tucker scored 13 points and Curtis Stinson added 11 and 11 assists for the Energy, who improved their league-leading record to 7-1. Iowa is 4-0 at home.

Gavin Grant scored 21 points, Dontell Jefferson added 20 and nine rebounds and Boston Celtics assignee Bill Walker had 19 and eight for the Flash (5-6), who had a three-game winning streak snapped.

Garnett

Before the Sacramento game, Garnett, 32, had played at least 37 minutes in four of the previous seven games. His minutes became a major concern for Rivers during the Celtics' first back-to-back losses of the season, to the Lakers and Warriors last week. In the 92-83 loss to Los Angeles on Christmas Day, Garnett had a solid game with 22 points and nine rebounds in 37 minutes. But the next night the fatigue factor set in, and he had just 14 points and four rebounds in 38 minutes in the 99-89 loss at Golden State.

--Marc J. Spears

1987itis is catchy. But unlike other colds Celtics' fans may contract this winter, we want Doc and the Celtics brass to catch this one. Once contracted, the malady reduces the temptation of running your starters into the ground to win silly games in January and February.

The Lakers game came and went. We lost. The only thing that matters the rest of the way is staying healthy, keeping the Big 3 rested, and building some sort of semblance of a bench, whether that means getting the current bench to elevate it's game or by shaking up the bench via a roster move or two.
