C's Invite Carlisle to Camp

The Celtics have invited four draft picks and one free agent to their veterans camp that begins in late September.

Boston's top four draft picks - Michael Young (6 feet 7, forward, Houston), Ronnie Williams (6-7, forward, Florida), Rick Carlisle (6-5, guard, Virginia) and Kevin Mullin (6-5, guard, Princeton) - plus free agent forward Winfred King have been asked to try out for the defending world champs. All five participated in Red Auerbach's annual rookie camp last week. King was drafted by the Celtics in 1983 and spent last season on their injured reserve list due to shoulder surgery.

The Celtics' preseason roster numbers 17, but M.L. Carr says he's contemplating retirement, and free agents Gerald Henderson and Cedric Maxwell remain unsigned (general manager Jan Volk is vacationing until next week). It is also possible that one or more of the rookie hopefuls will elect to play overseas rather than take a shot with the Celtics.
