The waiver period on Pete Maravich ends today, after which any team can try to sign the flashy 31-year-old guard with the troublesome knees who has yet to play on an NBA championship team. One club which appears to have more than just a passing interest is the Philadelphia 76ers, whose coach, Billy Cunningham, said last night that he views the 6-foot-5 guard as a potential "insurance policy." There has been no word from the Celtics, but general manager Red Auerbach has expressed prior interest in acquiring Maravich . . . The Milwaukee Bucks, in an effort to compensate for the loss of hospitalized head coach Don Nelson, have signed Dave Wohl as an interim assistant coach.

Rondo is the key player on the team. Ray and Paul need to take most of the shots. KG and JO play D. But Rondo elevates the entire team by playing well.

We long ago reached a “Waiting For Godot’’ point with the majestic Shaquille O’Neal, who has given us only those five celebrated good minutes of play since Feb. 1. My mother used to have a saying about our ETA when my family and I would drive down to Jersey from the South Shore: “I’ll expect you when I see you.’’ And that’s how we should approach Shaq.
Meanwhile, one O’Neal is better than none.
After all the weeping and wailing over the trading of Kendrick Perkins, the fact is the Celtics could luck out in this center thing anyway. It’s not going to be the issue with Miami. If and when Chicago shows up, Joakim Noah is a fine player, but he’s not an offensive-minded, physical center. The only problem in the East would have been Dwight Howard, and that is not going to be an issue.
If the Celtics ever got to the Finals, they could start worrying if they were to play the Lakers or Mavericks (Tyson Chandler can be a handful). But that would be a pleasant worry, wouldn’t it?
Here they are, one series down and three to go. They get to balance practice and rest this week, and, aside from the Big Godot, they are healthy.
They are in line to give Miami their best shot. What more can anyone ask?

Shaq’s not expected to take the floor today either, with tomorrow the earliest possible date for the big man to test his ailing right calf and Achilles tendon in a full-court run.

They were eliminated in heartbreaking Game 7s in each of the last three seasons and there were questions about their hearts and souls when they took the ice Wednesday night for the final game of their 33d playoff series against the hated Canadiens.
For one night, the Bruins made all the pain go away. No more agita on ice. Nathan Horton's booming slapshot from out top in the sixth minute of overtime beat the Canadiens 4-3 in overtime in Game 7 of their first-round playoff series.
