Brown and Walker Named Co-Captains

October 9, 1997

Dee Brown and Walker were named cocaptains by Pitino. This represents quite a comeback for Brown, who was stripped of his captaincy after asking out of town in January 1996. The veteran guard conceded that he wasn't sure what it took to be captain when he first got the job .

Brown on Larry Bird's comment that Brown isn't a hard worker and isn't worth his salary: "It doesn't bother me. Not one bit. The only person I answer to right now is Rick Pitino. I still think Larry is the best player I've ever played with. I still think Larry is a great guy. That's the personal opinion towards me and that's OK. That's just going to make me work a little harder and get after it more." He said there will be no vendettas when he plays against Bird's Pacers. "I don't think it's a good idea to get into a war with words with Larry," added Brown. "He's an icon in Boston."

Pervis Ellison didn't practice. He had a bronchial infection and high fever . . . Pitino said the team is in the market for another big man. He would like to make a trade but the players he would try to move don't have the necessary value. Most likely, a forward or center will be picked up off waivers . . . Biggest surprise of camp so far? Bruce Bowen, the 6-7 free agent forward who was signed away from the Heat. "He's been terrific," Pitino said. "We got ourselves a great steal there." Bowen not only has played small forward, he also has excelled at both guard spots. "We've got a three-position player," Pitino marveled.

The Celtics leave Newport this afternoon and play the Atlanta Hawks tomorrow and Saturday. They know they've just begun to hear and see glimpses of what Pitino will offer.
