Larry Drops 53 in W

He is the keeper of the flame. He is continuity with the past, excellence of the present and hope for the future. He is the torch-carrying inspiration on this team loaded with talent and question marks.

CELTICS' VERSATILITY DRAWS RAVES

The last leg of the 13-day journey began with a wakeup call at 4:30 a.m. But few of the Celtics were complaining and some stayed up all night in anticipation of an early-morning flight.

JUST WHERE DID THE CELTS GO WRONG?

It is a city that's been weaned on disappointment.

It suffered Bucky Dent's shot over the Green Monster at Fenway Park in the memorable 1978 American League East playoff game with New York.

CELTICS GET DJ TO TUNE OFF TONEY

Is Dennis Johnson the antidote to the 76ers' Boston Strangler? Is that why the Celtics reached out for him yesterday, obtaining the 6-3 guard from Phoenix for backup center Rick Robey?

And is it safe to invite Red Auerbach and John Sandquist to the same party? Or even the same press conference?

CELTICS NAME K.C. JONES - ASSISTANT COACH WILL SUCCEED BILL FITCH

Boston assistant coach K. C. Jones, who played on eight Celtics championship teams, fulfilled a dream yesterday, when he was named head coach of the National Basketball Association team.

Jones succeeds Bill Fitch, who resigned May 27 after four years in the job. Fitch, whose Celtics teams had a 242-86 record, had cited team owner Harry Mangurian's plans to sell the club as a key reason for stepping down.

Heinsohn to Replace Fitch?

HEINSOHN MAY REPLACE FITCH

Former Boston Celtics coach Tommy Heinsohn said he is so interested in rejoining the team he will lower his salary demands, which were so high negotiations failed with another NBA franchise.

Heinsohn has said he has no hard feelings from his 1978 firing and sees no reason why the Celtics would not want him back.

''I'm willing to take less money to coach them than I would want for doing the same thing anywhere else,'' Heinsohn said. ''I don't think salary would be an issue or stumbling block the way it was in my negotiations with the (Houston) Rockets.''

Celtics coach Bill Fitch's resignation Friday capped a week of announcements that shook the team. Owner Harry Mangurian said he was selling the team because he could not resolve differences with Boston Garden management. Celtics president and general manager Red Auerbach said he was reconsidering retirement. Fitch cited his departure on the possibility of both Mangurian and Auerbach leaving Boston.

Nellie Fined for Calling Ainge Cheap Shot Artist

May 5, 1983

The National Basketball Assn. has fined Milwaukee Bucks coach Don Nelson $1000 for comments he made about Danny Ainge of the Celtics.

Nelson was quoted by the Milwaukee Journal as referring to Ainge as a "cheap-shot artist" and expressing concern that Ainge's playing tactics could result in injury to his players.

The Bucks said yesterday that the NBA had called the comments about Ainge inappropriate and detrimental to the best interests of the game. Nelson will appeal the decision.

CELTICS DRAWN AND QUARTERED 9-POINT FINAL PERIOD GIVES BUCKS 2-0 LEAD

This one made you want to cry 96 tears. The Celtics weren't lacking nobility, just ability.

This time, the sad Celtics had no reasons to hang their heads. On a night when they led for 45 of 48 minutes and held a whopping 17-point second-half margin, they went into a freeze-frame fourth-quarter offense which produced nine (count em, nine) points and a 95-91 Game 2 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks at Boston Garden.

This year, it'll be Boston's turn (assuming the Celtics survive a mini-series), and last night's 116-108 loss to the Bucks was a scary reminder of the rough road to Philadelphia.

BIRD'S SURGE FOILS NETS

There are certain things a team can try to do to stop Larry Bird. Tonight, nothing the Nets tried worked. After sitting out the first six minutes of the final period, Bird scored 13 of Boston's next 19 points and finished with 30 as the Celtics defeated the New Jersey Nets, 121-114, at the Civic Center.
