lacking the kind of toughness needed to pull out close victories. After
last night's game at the FleetCenter, no one can question the toughness
of Paul Pierce.

Forte Giving it a Go

Former Celtics first-round draft pick Joseph Forte is trying, once again.
Forte, whom the Celtics selected with the 21st pick in 2001 (we won't say anything more), lasted one year with the team, appearing in eight games and playing 39 minutes. He was, indeed, Clueless Joe. The Celtics moved him to Seattle in the Vin Baker deal and he lasted a year there. Seattle waived him, eating the final year of Forte's rookie contract.
The Asheville Altitude of the National Basketball Development League signed him Dec. 14 and, in his first four games, Forte played 58 minutes, scoring 8 points on 3-of-17 shooting.
Forte may never make the grade as an NBA player, but he is one of only four University of North Carolina players to earn consensus All-America honors as a sophomore. The others were Jerry Stackhouse, J.R. Reid, and a guy named Michael Jordan.

At the beginning of his new book about Arnold "Red" Auerbach, John Feinstein relates a story about the day in the early 1990s when Globe sports columnist Dan Shaughnessy approached the legendary Boston Celtics coach and team president about doing a book about his life. "Okay, I'll do it," Auerbach told Shaughnessy. "Just don't do to me what that SOB did to Bobby Knight." Anyone who read Shaughnessy's "Seeing Red" or who is familiar with the prolific Feinstein's work knows that Feinstein is, indeed, "that SOB."

Celtics Pin Loss on Knicks
The Celtics are beginning to bring their road toughness home. After trailing for three quarters last night at the FleetCenter, the Celtics defeated the Knicks, 114-109, by opening the fourth quarter with a decisive 21-5 run.
The win brought Boston within a game of the .500 mark (12-13).

CHICAGO - The Celtics' starters played surprisingly few minutes in the final quarter last night, even though a comeback was within reach. Raef LaFrentz and Mark Blount stayed on the bench the entire quarter. Gary Payton and Paul Pierce played the final four minutes down the stretch. Jiri Welsch made a one-minute cameo, though he has not been a regular finisher. The reallocation of minutes to Ricky Davis, Al Jefferson, Marcus Banks, Tony Allen, and Walter McCarty was not some newfangled strategy employed by head coach Doc Rivers. It was a message.

The coach of the Celtics is talking defense a lot these days. It's one topic Doc Rivers won't avoid - but it's a concept his players have had a tendency to avoid. "In the end, you have to play defense," said Rivers before last night's 119-101 victory over Orlando. "He knows the game," said Toronto guard Milt Palacio, a teammate of Williams with the Celtics. "He's a tough SOB." Williams is with his third team in the last 1 1/2 seasons. He ended last season with the Cavaliers. He signed with the Nets as a free agent over the summer. He was traded to the Raptors Dec. 17 as part of the Vince Carter clearance. Last night was his 10th game with Toronto and his ninth start. "Everything's pretty cool," he said prior to the Celtics-Raptors game.

If there was ever an opportune time for point guard Gary Payton to strain his left hamstring and have his consecutive-game streak snapped, it was last night, with the New Orleans Hornets at the FleetCenter. With or without Payton, the Celtics were favored against New Orleans, which entered with a 2-26 record. The visitors have just one road win all season and they have not won since Dec. 15 against Golden State.
