Pierce Buzzer Beater Takes Down Theo Ratliff and the Blazers

11/11/04

Less than a week ago, Doc Rivers talked about the Celtics lacking the kind of toughness needed to pull out close victories. After last night's game at the FleetCenter, no one can question the toughness of Paul Pierce.

Forte Giving it a Go

January 2, 2005

Former Celtics first-round draft pick Joseph Forte is trying, once again.

Forte, whom the Celtics selected with the 21st pick in 2001 (we won't say anything more), lasted one year with the team, appearing in eight games and playing 39 minutes. He was, indeed, Clueless Joe. The Celtics moved him to Seattle in the Vin Baker deal and he lasted a year there. Seattle waived him, eating the final year of Forte's rookie contract.

The Asheville Altitude of the National Basketball Development League signed him Dec. 14 and, in his first four games, Forte played 58 minutes, scoring 8 points on 3-of-17 shooting.

Forte may never make the grade as an NBA player, but he is one of only four University of North Carolina players to earn consensus All-America honors as a sophomore. The others were Jerry Stackhouse, J.R. Reid, and a guy named Michael Jordan.

No Picassos in Celtics Win

No Picassos in Celtics Win

January 6, 2005

The word "ugly" was tossed around rather freely last night - and with good reason. The 13,078 hostages, er, fans who sat through the Celtics' torpid, 84-83 victory over the Golden State Warriors had to have one thought in mind when they got home: Take a shower.

Tony Allen Showing Promise

Tony Allen Showing Promise

January 9, 2005

CHICAGO - It was quite a homecoming for Chicago native Tony Allen, who finally got a chance to play before friends and family at the United Center. The rookie guard missed a road exhibition game against the Bulls after suffering a hyperextended left knee. But lately, Allen has made up for lost time, earning minutes with his tough-minded, energetic play.

Let Me Tell You a Story

Let Me Tell You a Story

 January 13, 2005

At the beginning of his new book about Arnold "Red" Auerbach, John Feinstein relates a story about the day in the early 1990s when Globe sports columnist Dan Shaughnessy approached the legendary Boston Celtics coach and team president about doing a book about his life. "Okay, I'll do it," Auerbach told Shaughnessy. "Just don't do to me what that SOB did to Bobby Knight." Anyone who read Shaughnessy's "Seeing Red" or who is familiar with the prolific Feinstein's work knows that Feinstein is, indeed, "that SOB."

Celtics Pin Loss on Knicks

The Celtics are beginning to bring their road toughness home. After trailing for three quarters last night at the FleetCenter, the Celtics defeated the Knicks, 114-109, by opening the fourth quarter with a decisive 21-5 run.

The win brought Boston within a game of the .500 mark (12-13).

Rivers Benches Starters

Rivers Benches Starters

January 9, 2005

CHICAGO - The Celtics' starters played surprisingly few minutes in the final quarter last night, even though a comeback was within reach. Raef LaFrentz and Mark Blount stayed on the bench the entire quarter. Gary Payton and Paul Pierce played the final four minutes down the stretch. Jiri Welsch made a one-minute cameo, though he has not been a regular finisher. The reallocation of minutes to Ricky Davis, Al Jefferson, Marcus Banks, Tony Allen, and Walter McCarty was not some newfangled strategy employed by head coach Doc Rivers. It was a message.

Doc to Team: Play D or Don't Play

Doc to Team: Play D or Don't Play

January 10, 2005

Before Saturday night's game at Chicago, Celtics coach Doc Rivers was asked for the keys to victory. "Transition defense and rebounding," said Rivers. Then, he thought about his answer and added, "How many more games do we have? Well, you can put that down for the rest of the season."

Rivers Talks D

Rivers Talks D

January 11, 2005

The coach of the Celtics is talking defense a lot these days. It's one topic Doc Rivers won't avoid - but it's a concept his players have had a tendency to avoid.   "In the end, you have to play defense," said Rivers before last night's 119-101 victory over Orlando.   Rivers raised a few eyebrows Saturday night in Chicago when he left his second unit on the floor for much of the fourth quarter in a very winnable game against the Bulls. The Celtics lost, and Rivers said he was not happy with the defensive performance of his starters.

The bus was lost. The driver couldn't find the FleetCenter and traffic was a mess, a typical Friday night in Boston.

"I didn't even know where he was taking us. I don't know where we where," said Antoine Walker, who returned to a familiar playground last night, the FleetCenter, a place he called home for seven seasons.

It wasn't pretty, but it was a victory, and that is all Doc Rivers cares about as the Celtics head into a four-day break before their next game.

"It was a win," said Rivers of the Celtics' 106-94 victory over the Antoine Walker-led Atlanta Hawks last night in front of a sellout crowd of 18,624 at the FleetCenter.

E.Will on Third Team in Less than Two Seasons

January 13, 2005

TORONTO - He hasn't been here even a month, but you can tell that Eric Williams, as is his history, already has had an impact on the Raptors. "He knows the game," said Toronto guard Milt Palacio, a teammate of Williams with the Celtics. "He's a tough SOB." Williams is with his third team in the last 1 1/2 seasons. He ended last season with the Cavaliers. He signed with the Nets as a free agent over the summer. He was traded to the Raptors Dec. 17 as part of the Vince Carter clearance. Last night was his 10th game with Toronto and his ninth start. "Everything's pretty cool," he said prior to the Celtics-Raptors game.

C's Lose; Hustle Stats Explain Why

MIAMI - Shaquille O'Neal sat this one out with a left calf contusion no one seems to remember him getting. That gave the Shaqolytes a chance to get their very own selves on "SportsCenter" for a change.

C's Have No Answer for D-Wade

MIAMI - Celtics coach Doc Rivers knew a Shaq-less Miami team still could be formidable, but he regarded this game as a lost opportunity regardless.

Who is Michael Doleac?

MIAMI - Let's see . . . you hear the term, "Miami Heat." And the first name you think of these days is not Michael Doleac.

But that's who was starting at center against the Celtics last night. Shaquille O'Neal was hors de combat with a contusion on his left calf.

Celtics Defense Good at Giving up Points

Celtics Defense Good at Giving up Points

January 13, 2005 TORONTO

Only the day before, Paul Pierce joked about the lack of luster and sizzle here now that Vince Carter is gone. "They've got Morris Peterson," Pierce said. He was joking. He proved prophetic. Peterson lit up the Celtics for a career-high 37 points last night, sending the Celtics to a 104-93 setback before an appreciative, if un-Vince-like, gathering of 15,108 at the Air Canada Centre. Peterson may lack the star appeal or the cachet of Carter, but he was downright destructive last night, dropping seven treys on the beleaguered Boston defense, which once again allowed triple figures. An exasperated Pierce said afterward, "This is the first time in my Celtics career that we've given up so many 100-point games.

"We're fourth in the league in field goal percentage. We're sixth in the league in scoring. But we're 26th in the league in turnovers and then 29th in the league in rebounding," said Celtics coach Doc Rivers after yesterday's practice at HealthPoint. His diagnosis? "That's what makes you inconsistent," said Rivers of his 16-20 team, which takes on old friend Antoine Walker and the 6-26 Atlanta Hawks tonight at the FleetCenter.

Patient Willing, Doc Unwilling

January 4, 2005

Whether or not Gary Payton would play last night was truly a game-time decision. At 6:37 p.m., the Celtics announced that he would not dress and that second-year point guard Marcus Banks would start. But before Payton rested, he had an unusually busy night.

If there was ever an opportune time for point guard Gary Payton to strain his left hamstring and have his consecutive-game streak snapped, it was last night, with the New Orleans Hornets at the FleetCenter. With or without Payton, the Celtics were favored against New Orleans, which entered with a 2-26 record. The visitors have just one road win all season and they have not won since Dec. 15 against Golden State.

Missing the Point

January 3, 2005

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - The turning point in last night's game came less than three minutes into the third quarter. That's when Gary Payton limped to the visitors' locker room after suffering a strained left hamstring.
