Posey, House Lead C's to 15th Win

12/6/2007

PHILADELPHIA - The Celtics entered yesterday with the best defense in the NBA. But if you didn't know better, you probably wouldn't have guessed that last night.

Ainge takes long route

June 8, 2007

Corey Brewer and Al Thornton - two of the players the Celtics are considering for the fifth pick in the draft - had a right to be tired after going through their paces for the club yesterday.

But Danny Ainge also was looking a bit fatigued after hopscotching the states to look at potential draftees.

Celtics have much to Prove

11/3/2007

The Celtics have been on every magazine cover but Foreign Affairs.

The coach is amused.

"I can't control that," says Doc Rivers. "So I'm not really 'OK' with it. But I understand it. I keep telling them that it's not the team on the cover that matters; it's the team on the floor."

Seems Like Old Times

Back then, the Celtics had more notable rivalries. But nobody seemed to stoke the Celts' ire quite like the Detroit Pistons.

There's a New Sheriff in the East

In an intense contest between the East's top two teams, the Celtics defeated the Pistons, 90-78, last night in front of a sellout crowd at TD Banknorth Garden.

Ray's Trey Moves C's to 11-1

11/25/2007

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Imagine that. A Celtics game with no double-digit leads - by either team. A Celtics game with more than 20 lead changes. A Celtics game where - gulp - the Celtics actually trailed in the fourth quarter and went down to the last shot.

Reggie Miller to Make It a Big 4?

August 9, 2007

Never underestimate Danny Ainge's ability to think differently.

Karl Malone, Antonio McDyess and Allen Iverson were all targets of the Celtics executive director of basketball operations at some stage over the last four years.

Powe Bloodies Baby Twice in Same Practice

November 4, 2007

The relative serenity of yesterday's Celtics practice was broken when Glen Davis took exception to getting his nose bloodied by Leon Powe. By NBA standards, it was absolutely nothing out of the ordinary, but ``Big Baby'' made his displeasure known.

No Deal Imminent as Draft Nears

June 2007

The Celtics finished up their work in the gym yesterday, prepared to use their first-round pick in tonight's NBA draft. But they're also prepared to deal it away.

Decent value at the 5-spot

June 17, 2007

Assessing next week's NBA draft, some have said that picks No. 3 through 15 are of similar quality, if not completely interchangeable.

But don't tell that to the Celtics, who are mulling over a list of seven and possibly eight players in the event they keep the fifth pick.

Beat LA

Beat LA

June 2008

Expect Jack Nicholson to be flying into Logan Airport while Celtics fans from Chatham to Chicopee to Charlestown revive their "Beat LA!" chants. Television executives are salivating over a matchup that has not played out in more than two decades. In today's editions, a headline in the Sun Star Cebu in the Philippines reads: "Are you ready? It's Celtics vs. Lakers."

Kobe-to-Bulls Deal Unlikely

November 4, 2007

John Paxson, general manager of the Chicago Bulls, says there's nothing going on with his team regarding a deal for Kobe Bryant.

"There's not going to be a deal done," Paxson said last week after the Kobe-to-Chicago rumors went on overload. "All the things that were out there were really unfair to all of us who were trying to do our jobs."

In other words, look for the deal to go down in 72 hours. (Just kidding.)

Lakers Crumble and Fade

LOS ANGELES - The Celtics really wanted to celebrate in the locker room. And how could you blame them after completing possibly the greatest comeback in NBA Finals history and the Celtics' illustrious history?

But there was no champagne in the locker room. No Larry O'Brien championship trophy. No NBA title hats or T-shirts. And Sam Cassell and James Posey, the Celtics with NBA titles on their rÈsumÈs, reminded everyone that one more win is needed before they can pop bottles and get sized for championship rings

Doc, Danny, and Big 3 Celebrate Emotional Win

With 4:01 left Doc Rivers made like Carol Burnett and tugged on his left ear.

With the crowd wailing ``Goodbye,'' Glen Davis, Leon Powe and Tony Allen replaced Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett.

Ticket Cashes In

The bully had hounded Kevin Garnett since he entered the league as a high schooler back in 1995. The bully never let Garnett sniff a championship. Whenever Garnett got close, the bully slammed him in the jaw and left him whimpering. He'd have to wait another year.

But now?

``I knocked the bully's (butt) out,'' Garnett said last night. ``I knocked his (butt) clean out.''

The Long Nightmare is Over

At 11:54 Eastern Daylight Time last evening, the Celtics finally returned to port. Twenty-two years after setting out in search of a 17th championship, the Shamrock ship reached shore.

Garnett Chases Bully

With 4:01 left and all but the trophy presentation awaiting, Kevin Garnett embraced Paul Pierce and Doc Rivers on the Boston sideline, but the adrenaline was still flowing, so Garnett knocked his coach upside the head for good measure

Jesus Saves his Best for Last

One after another. Rhythm, release, splash. Nothing but net

Ray Allen tied an NBA Finals record last night with seven 3-pointers in Game 6 against the Lakers, each dagger a tug of the rope raising the Celtics' 17th championship banner to the rafters at TD Banknorth Garden. When it was all said and done, Allen joined Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Doc Rivers in a group hug celebrating the accomplishments of the Big Three.

"We just [said] we loved each other," said Rivers. "They all said, 'Thank you,' and I said, 'Thank you' back."

Lakers Lose

June 17, 2008

It was Over Early

After a while, Phil Jackson didn't even bother looking at the score.

The second half was just a 24-minute countdown to the inevitable. He knew when he left the locker room at halftime last night that he was working with a team of tin men.

He couldn't pinpoint when it happened. Maybe it was one of the two 3-pointers James Posey drilled early in the second quarter.

Maybe it was the one Eddie House drained.

Auerbach Enjoys Watching 17th Banner

June 17, 2008

Coasting on air

Randy Auerbach, daughter of late Celtics patriarch Red Auerbach, enjoyed watching the team win the title with her friends back home in Los Angeles. After the game, she said via e-mail: "Danny [Ainge] and [Rivers] and the owners and the team have embodied all the values and integrity that my dad brought to the Celtics and clearly it's a formula that works! My sister and I are both thrilled and especially happy that my nieces and nephew were able to experience a championship as we were able to growing up. It would have given my father immense satisfaction to hang number 17, particularly at the expense of Mr. Jackson and company, and to have so many Celtic alumni there to represent the first 16!"

Scalabrine time

During a lull in postgame interviews, reserve forward Brian Scalabrine stepped to the podium, unsolicited, to give the media some words about their predictions for the NBA Finals. "Let me break it down for you guys," Scalabrine said to laughter. "A long, long, long time ago, we committed to this team. We committed to the defensive end. We had the personnel to do it. How, when you guys consider yourselves NBA experts, can you pick the Lakers to beat us in six games? We're on TV all the time, so it's not like you don't get to watch us play. You guys were so convincing that I maybe thought in my heart that, wow this is going to be a series. I have questions for you guys. We won 66 games, we had the best defense in the NBA. I just didn't see it."

Rolling this out

A rolling rally is scheduled for tomorrow at 11 a.m. . . . Pierce played 38 minutes 35 seconds, continuing a trend of huge minutes . . . Asked if it was OK to refer to him, Pierce, and Allen as "The Big Three," Kevin Garnett said, "No. Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, and Kevin Garnett. Y'all got to get us a new nickname. I know you're all more creative than 'The Big Three.'“
