Can you Spell PJ Brown?

We’re going through the evaluation process. It all depends on what other needs we may have and if there are any other needs that are more important than keeping Brandon Wallace and having him develop.

Danny Ainge uttered those words over the weekend, and curious words they are.

The Boston Celtics currently have one roster spot open, and cutting Brandon Wallace would give them two rosters spots.

Big Baby Davis (stats) has been a welcome surprise. But at 6'6" or 6'7", he's not really a long term answer to the back-up five-spot on the roster. Even if you agree with Doc Rivers that the NBA is shrinking, once the playoffs arrive, the Celtics will not only need a more "traditionally sized" big man playing behind Kendrick Perkins in the middle, they will need a veteran presence as well.

What about Scot Pollard, you ask?

I like Pollard, and from the little I've seen of him, he, too, has been a pleasant surprise.

But if there's one thing we've learned about Doc in the last four years, players find out quickly whether Doc plans to use them with any regularity, and Pollard has seen more pine-time than playing time over the first 19 games. I don't expect this to change any time soon.

Hopefully, Doc and Danny have PJ Brown's number on their speed dial (not to mention the number of whomever else they plan to take roster spot 15 in the event BWall is cut).

Perhaps, but Danny has something up his sleeve.

We aren't going into the playoffs with a 6'6" guy as our primary backup 5.

No?

I hear a 6'6 guy named Charles Barkley did pretty well in the league. Either way, I don't believe that Davis, who's listed at 6'9, is 6'6. Plus, he is primary backup because he earned it with his play. Scott Pollard, who wasn't playing half-bad, is sitting on the bench, and I don't expect P.J. Brown, who hasn't played for what 1/4 of the season already, to be any better.
