The 70-Win Monkey

Another loss, another monkey off our back.

The Cs start the season with one victory, and then another...and then another, until we were finally 8-0.

After each win, the media would ask"So are ya gonna go undefeated?"

No Celtic ever admitted it, but I think the undefeated start carried with it a certain amount of unnecessary stress.

Then we lost a game, and the subject of an undefeated season went the way of a popped balloon.

Problem was we went on another long winning streak, lost a couple of games, and went on an even longer winning streak, a winning streak that was punctuated by a victory over a team many perceived as the best in professional basketball.

If we were 29-3 and beat the best team in basketball, many opined, surely we wouldn't lose more than a few games the rest of the way.

Certain observers even went so far as to project only four losses the rest of the way, and identify exactly which teams might hand us those losses. The author in question was careful to emphasize that the Cs might not even lose those games, but in his mind those games were the only realistic chances of defeat the Cs faced.

Again the local and national media fed off of each other.

"So are ya gonna surpass the Bulls record?" The media was now fond of asking.

I love this team, and I love the Celtics.

But this team is not a 70-win team, even in the watered down league known as the 2007-08 NBA.

This team is a 60-win team, and if anyone asks if the Cs are gonna win 60, they should just come out and exclaim "damn straight. We're gonna win 60!"

My point here is that all of this speculation is just a distraction to the real mission, getting better and winning number 17 in June. We need to have our flaws exposed, instead of laboring under the delusion that this team is somehow more complete than the 1985-86 Celtics.

We are a good team that plays great defense and plays most games like its the NBA finals. You add together those three factors and you're bound to win a heap of games.

I want to win 60.

But I want to win a championship more.

So let's get down to business and evaluate our roster and determine what needs to be done to complete the puzzle that will make the score Celtics 17 Lakers 14.

but you have to admit it's fun speculating about it.

A 70-win season would have been fun...if we also would have won #17...
