Powe, Perk and Wilt's Record

After Kendrick Perkins shot 80% percent in the pre-season, I (with tongue-in-cheek) predicted he would continue making baskets at this rate and break Wilt Chamberlin's single-season record for field-goal percentage.

Well, the one we affectionately call the Beast is shooting .592 after 46 games. Very good. But nothing close to Wilt’s mark of .727.

To be perfectly honest, my original prediction wasn’t totally tongue-in-cheek. I theorized that with the Big Three drawing double teams, Perk would regularly be wide open underneath to finish off several plays each game with a dunk. No doubt that has happed quite a bit. But the Beast is not really even a threat to shoot 65%.

The main reason, of course, was that Wilt was more talented, not to mention taller.

Wilt’s record becomes even more impressive when viewed in light of Leon Powe’s recent run outings. Last night against the Timberwolves Powe shot 8-10, and is shooting 25-38 over the last five games. Pretty accurate, but still only good for 65%, and that’s only over very short period of time.

Chamberlain averaged better than 7-10 over an entire 82-game schedule.

Almost impossible to fathom.
