For the Uninitiated

The other day on a Celtics message board, someone wrote “I don’t know what the big deal is. The Celtics are my favorite team and the Lakers are my second favorite team.”

Oh brother.

Poor kid probably was one of those wearing the Kobe jersey at the Gah-den a few years back.

I’m not sure how many Celtics fans there are out there who don’t quite grasp all that is the Celtics-Lakers rivalry, but I suspect the numbers aren’t small.

For the most part, these folks are

Too young to have seen Red and Russell send the Lakeshow home losers in seven straight Finals.

Too young to have seen Red and Larry make it eight straight in 1984.

and

Too young to see the purple finally claim victory in 1985 or 1987

For the uninitiated amongst us, I offer you the below videos. More specifically, I point you to Parts 18, 19, and 20.

Two phrases come to mind when watching those videos:

Tooth and Nail

Hammer and Tongs

The intensity level is amazing.

Basket. Basket. Basket.

Swish. Swish. Swish.

Back and forth, thrust and parry.

And it’s only the third quarter!!

The lead never varies more than 3 points for much of the three parts, until the 3:15 marker of the last part, when Danny Ainge nails a jumper to open up a six point lead. The fourth quarter has yet to begin, but you can see the Celtics start to squeeze the life out of the purple.

This, my dear friends, is Celtics-Lakers.

My two favorite teams are the Celtics and anyone playing the Lakers. I have an old ragged shirt from the 80's that has the Lakers logo and a big red circle with a line through it over it. It says Lakers Busters on it. I just ordered my new Beat LA shirt. I hate the Lakers. Being a Lakers and Celtics fan goes against the laws of nature.
