The NBA Finals According to Pat Riley

"The key to winning the NBA Finals is winning game 2. If the road team wins, it not only reverses the home court advantage, but it also gives the game 2 winner momentum heading into game three at home."

--Pat Riley, June 1985

Pat Riley made these words famous because he uttered them before game 2 of the 1985 NBA Finals, a couple of days after his team was shellacked by 34 points in game 1. Thirty-Eight-Year-Old Kareem Abdul-Jabbar then proceeded to turn in a performance for the ages later that night, and the series went downhill for the Cs from there.

Will Pat Riley's rule hold true for the 2008 NBA Finals?

Currently, the Celtics are favored by 2.5 points in game 1, which is schedule to be played on June 5th. Assume Vegas is right, and we win.

This year the NBA Gods decided not schedule game two until three days later, on June 8th.

I think Vegas might be right. The Cs will be jacked up for game 1, more jacked up than we've seen them in a while. They probably won't get to sleep early after game 1.

But instead of having to come back and play less than 48 hours later, they actually have an extra day to come down from the high of winning game one and then get their game face back on for game 2.

Maybe we win that one too.

At this point, the Lakers would be in deep trouble.

There is no way the Ls take all three games in LA.

That means at best (for the purple), they come back to Boston down 3-2.

You don't think Boston will lose two straight at home, now do you?
