The celebrated Dave Cowens "leave of absence" took place four years ago today. The departure lasted 32 games.
In the midst of Dave Cowens' sixth season he quit, taking a two-month leave of absence from the Celtics.
"It was hard to explain," Cowens says. "I just felt like I was going through the motions."
At least according to Cowens' standards.
The NBA logo is a figure of a man, said to be Jerry West, dribbling. If it were modeled after Cowens, it would be of a man diving across the floor after a basketball.
"I never saw myself as a great player," Cowens said, "only as a guy who set high standards and tried to give a little extra to the game."
Cowens averaged 17.6 points and 13.6 rebounds over his caeer.
