The Not So Green Mile: Celtics Stumbling without Walton

Bill Walton's Final Months as a Boston Celtic
January 1987

Think about it.

There hasn't been back-to-back talk for six weeks. The word "repeat" has been expunged from everyone's vocabulary, as has the name "Bill Walton."

The Boston Celtics no longer carry the burden of being the defending champions, with all the attendant expectations. They can retreat to the underdog, woe-is-us role they, like most teams, love so well. The Lakers are the de facto champions. The Hawks are the designated heirs apparent. The Celtics? Just a bunch of old guys looking for a little respect.
