Grain of Salt

I’ve been a big fan of history. To establish ourselves in a history that’s so enriched with culture and prestige and tradition is a great thing.

--Kevin Garnett on the Boston Celtics record-setting 21-2 start

Ok. So the Wiz stink. That much we've established.

But all this talk from Doc and Ray about records don't matter, and they don't give us anything for setting a record? Take it with a grain of salt.

We know our Boston Celtics. We know they are fully capable of sleep-walking through the early parts of games. I understand the team is playing well during this winning streak.

But they came out last night on a mission. The record was gonna be theirs. Prisoners would be given no quarter, and the Verizon Center quickly became an abattoir.

This team enjoys playing well, dominating, and piling up the wins, even more so than last year. Last year was about proving something to themselves. This year is about determining precisely how great they can become.

I haven't seen this type of attitude since that one team won 72 games. It doesn't mean that the 2008-09 Celtics will win 70 games or even 66. But if they stay healthy and maintain this level of play, I wouldn't rule it out.

By the way, that haywood guy was a beast in the middle and he is out for the year. Gilbert hasn't played.

So why exactly did the Wiz fire their head coach?

Was the expectation that they would be better with two critical injuries?

“They had our number last year,” Allen said, “and we remember that.”

Indeed, Celtics coach Doc Rivers said one of his players read something said by a member of the Wizards that drew his team’s attention.

Rivers heard his players talking about that before the game.

“It doesn’t take them much. I swear they, like, search the newspapers to find something,” Rivers said. “I didn’t need to give a rah-rah speech.”

I'm sure they remembered what Jamison said after the last game last year too.
