You take a look at the graphics in the below post, and you see two serviceable players whose careers both lasted about 1000 games. Twelve years and all you have to show for it is 1,000 games. Ok, Rick Fox has three rings. But at retirement age--maybe during nursing home convalescence--it sure seems like those thousand games amount to little more than a truck stop on the highway of life.
With that in mind, you can't fault any player for trying to milk the NBA for every last red cent it has before they call it a career.
