There is No Asterisk Next to the 1987 Championship

Please, please, please don't talk to me about injuries. I don't want to hear about how important Andrew Bynum is or was to the championship aspirations of the Los Angeles Lakers. I don't want to hear how the Lakers might have done last year or this year with a healthy Andrew Bynum.

We've already been through all that.

In 1987.

And the verdict from these Lakers fans back then was loud and clear.

Talkin' about injuries is for losers.

But if you feel compelled to talk injury, feel free to read the next several posts, and then get back to me.

32 posts in three days. I may need to take a breather.

Count me down for the Celtics would still have lost in '87 regardless of injuries and the Lakers are going to get beat this year with or without Bynum.

The Lakers were awfully deep in 1987.

Now, if you call Len Bias and injury, and you make everyone else healthy, I might disagree.

But it doesn't really matter.

Cuz I agree with the old lakers fans: It's losers talk.

For the "what if" series, I think an healty 1987 team would won it all, but I agree: complain for injury is for losers. But Miss Zen and the Fakers have made of complain a form of art... it's like a second nature for them: if they lost they have to find something to blame except themself.

Sounds like KG is iffy for Thursday.

That would be too bad.

I wouldn't put it past the Fakers to fake the Bynum injury because their schedule is finally getting difficult and he needed an excuse for why theywere going to start losing other than the fact than when the going gets tough the Fakers turn on each other.

The addition of Thompson put the Lakers over the top in 87. He was considered the only player in the league effective defensively against Mchale. Magic had also passed Bird as the best in the game in 87. Add the victory by the Lakers in 85, even a healthy team would have lost in 87. Len Bias might have been the only player who would have helped out in 87 but he was dead.

Fake the injury?

Well, they ain't called the fakers for nuttin'!

As for Mychal T, the best line of the year was from Bird.

"I can't believe the Lakers got Mychal Thompson. The Spurs just gave him away. Maybe they'll just give us Artis Gilmore."

The Spurs just GAVE him to them? You mean like the Grizzlies GAVE them Gasol? hmmmm Is there a pattern there?

And for anyone with the audacity to say that the Wolves gave Garnett to the Celtics, PULEEZE! They got 5 players including a most coveted expiring contract and a future perennial all star, two other players who are starting for them and playing quite well along with 2 first round picks. I wouldn't exactly call that nothing.

Yeah, I'll have to dig up the article from the trade. But it was like Frank Brickowski and a pick.

The Mychal Thompson trade really solved all of that team's problems. I read in one article the main reason for the trade was to combat the size of Houston's Twin Towers and then add in the fact that he was effective against McHale it gave the Lakers an advantage against the 2 previous teams in the Finals. I think that trade was worse than the Gasol trade since Marc Gasol might develop into a pretty good player.

Slightly worse. Yes
