Red & Larry Play Tennis, Red Keeps Score, Red Wins

Larry Bird's summer got off to a slow start. He dropped his annual challenge tennis match with Red Auerbach, 6-4, 6-4, although the outcome was marked by some questionable scorekeeping on the general manager's part.

"We were tied, 8-8, in the first set when I asked Red the score," said Bird. "He said it was 2-1. I said how can it be 2-1? Easy,' he said. I won the first set, 6-4, and now I'm ahead, 2-1.' Next time I keep score."

Coach Bill Fitch, who had a dollar riding on Bird, cautioned Auerbach that he might have made a mistake in winning. "Larry's mad as hell, Red. He says he's going to take it out on you the next time he sits down to talk contract."

Thanks, FCF. It rained a lot. But otherwise it was fun.

I don't get why "8-8" can be happened in a tennis set?

You have to win by two games, and if you don't have a tie-break, you just keep going.

I don't think so, look the explanation blew:

"3. In a tennis match, a game consists of 4 points, and a set is made when one of the players wins 6 games. However, if the game score is 5-5, you have to play to 7 in order to win the set. If the score then turns into 6-6 and not 7-5, a tie breaker is played to win the set, and whoever wins the tie breaker wins the "7th game"."

That means, who win the 7th game then win the set.

Actually from what Larry said is not very clear.

"We were tied, 8-8, in the first set when I asked Red the score," said Bird. "He said it was 2-1. I said how can it be 2-1? Easy,' he said. I won the first set, 6-4, and now I'm ahead, 2-1.' Next time I keep score."

When did Larry questioned Red for Score? in first Set?

then Red said,"I won the first set, 6-4," It looks like the conversation happened in second set
