Defensive Rebounding Numbers Up

Last week I posted a note over at the Army indicating that the Boston Celtics were 16th in the league in defensive rebounding percentage. This week we've improved to 13th. As others have observed, rebounding percentage is the key statistic, not rebounds per game, as you can't grab rebounds that aren't there to be grabbed. Rebounding should instead be measured as the number of boards that can be had in a particular game. We'll keep an eye on this stat as the season unfolds.

A few more odds and ends.

Orlando is the best defensive rebounding team in the NBA, followed by Cleveland, Milwaukee, and San Antonio. The Fakers rank 18th. Overall, the Celtics rank 21st in the league in rebounding, once offensive rebounding percentages are included. Portland is #1 overall. Back in the day (read the 1980s), we owned both of these stats, defensive rebounding percentage and overall rebounding percentage.
