Fitch Gone, But Not Forgotten

HOUSTON

The Celtics were in a frivolous mood when they arrived at the Summit for a shooting practice early yesterday. Kevin McHale walked to the middle of the floor and hollered toward the empty arena, "Come on down, Bill, we know you're up there." Ex-Celtics coach Bill Fitch was nowhere in sight, but his name was mentioned a few hundred times during the light workout.

Some of the Celtics were amused by one of Fitch's remarks in the morning paper. He told the Houston Post, "I think for (the Celtics) to appreciate me, they'll have to go through a six-game losing streak again." "We won't start losing six straight tonight," commented Cedric Maxwell. After practice, the Celtics boarded their bus and waited for a driver who never appeared (which sounds like an old Red Auerbach trick). It was then that Fitch wheeled into the Summit garage.

As he got out of his car, he was accused of kidnapping the bus driver. "Let Max drive," Fitch hollered. Fitch didn't walk down the aisle to exchange high-fives with his former team, and there was no exchange whatsoever between Fitch and Celtics coach K.C. Jones. After his short salutation, Fitch bundled some video cassettes under his arm and walked into the Summit. Houston's practice lasted twice as long as Boston's and included no shooting time. The Rockets walked through plays for an hour, then watched 20 minutes of film.
