Exactly What is a Technorati?

Here I am minding my own business, making plans for the weekend, trying to figure out all the hot spots where Tiger met his special friends, and I get this anonymous email from an apparent blog reader. Long story short, the fella (or gal) informs me that the obscure and rarely read blog entitled Lex Nihil Novi is ranked in the top-50 among all NBA blogs by something called Technorati.

I don't respond, but think to myself, how stupid does this person think I am? But, what the hell. It's Friday. Let's check out the veracity of this outrageous statement. Off I go to Technorati, click on this, shuffle over to that, and pretty soon I'm at a list that purports to rank basketball blogs.

Slam online is #1. No surprise there. Following close behind are Empty the Bench, the ESPN-driven Celtics Hub, and I even see the world-famous Indy Cornrows. Whoa. Wait a second. Indy Cornrows is only #34? Double whoa. Who's that tied with Indy Cornrows, with a bullet pointing toward the heavens, no less? OMG. Stop the presses!!!

A blogger who spends 90% of his time posting newspaper articles from 30 years ago and 8% of his time posting music, television, and movie clips is ranked 34th on the list? Ahead of my two personal favorite Celtics blogs, the Army (The Backbone of Celtics Nation) and Florida Celtics Fan (The Nerve Center of Celtics Nation)?

I'm not going to make too much of this. On this day, February 5th, 2010, I suppose it is an honor of sorts. Don't get me wrong. My blog kicked some ass from about 10/5/2007 until 12/25/2008. I even had two esteemed writers stop by to pay me a visit during that period. A few of my rants since then--the KG and the Grassy Knoll Series--were fun to do. But by and large, this blog seems like more work than it's worth. Only a few people comment, it generates a dearth of hits, and how interesting can articles from 30 years ago really be?

At the very least, I guess this will give me a moment to pause before I stop paying the mortgage on the place and let it go into foreclosure. Even bad bloggers need to engage in shameless self-promotion and backslapping every now and then.

OK, then. As you were.

The answer to what about the other 2% question is, yes, every now and then I post something original, well, original in the sense that it came out of my brain. I'm not saying the ideas themselves are original.
