Jerry West: Kobe is the Best Laker Ever

"Kobe's the best player in Laker history," says Jerry West, casting aside such other worthies to such an exalted throne as Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Elgin Baylor, George Mikan and even himself. "He does things on the court that are simply amazing. And he's gotten better every year. He's improved every facet of his game, which is what great players do throughout their careers. He just keeps adding to it.

Two years ago, before the Lakers and Celtics renewed their storied spring rivalry after a 19-year drought, Jerry West predicted the Celtics would emerge victorious even though his former team had been made a 2-to-1 favorite by the Las Vegas oddsmakers.

But West, who celebrated his 72nd birthday Friday, envisions a different outcome in the upcoming days.

"This is going to be a very intriguing and interesting series," he says. "It's also going to be tremendously competitive, but I think this time the Lakers will wind up on top.

"Boston is a little older and the Lakers are now more experienced. But the Lakers are going to have to maintain their concentration at all times and not have any sustained lapses, as they're known to do on occasion.
