But it's not the shot or the points that attracted the Celtics to Harangody as much as his nose for the basketball and his ability to stick it in there enough to be successful on what Boston likes to call the 50-50 plays -- scrapping for rebounds and picking up floor burns from diving for loose balls.
"He definitely didn't come in like somebody who had been drafted, unlike like a lot of these guys, and therefore felt that he was guaranteed something," Ainge said. "In this league, even if you're a first-round pick, you've always got to be proving yourself to get playing time. You've got to prove yourself every day that you're worthy of your position. I think Luke will find out that the competition is tough and you've got to earn your stripes every day in this business."
The questions that most scouts and NBA clubs had about Harangody entering the draft were about his ability to play defense at the game's top level. They were the same questions that confronted him a year ago when he made himself available for the 2009 draft and then pulled out when he was told that he'd be no higher than a second-round pick. But after returning for a final season with the Irish, that didn't change. So here he is with still all the same things to prove.
"Obviously, that's the big question about me," Harangody said. "People want to know whether I can guard up here and out there. The Celtics put a huge emphasis on it, being in the right position and where you're at on the floor. I'm aware of that what I need to prove, what I need to do.

Consider the three souvenir stitches on his face as Harangody's way of taking and making his early mark.
