Playing Shrink with KG
Newspapers, bloggers, and TV commentators have all noticed an significant uptick in Kevin Garnett's performance over the last couple of months. Doc Rivers recently called him "unbelievable." Others are talking about his "MVP-like" play.
No disagreement here.
Indeed, I was surprised in February when during a game TNT told me that KG was leading the league that month in the plus or minus category.
Whoa!
Then again, should it really be all that surprising?
I mean, well, let's be honest.
It's a contract year.
No, KG won't make $20 million next year like he is this year, and has in the past.
But, damn, how many other Kevin Garnetts are there in the league?
Is there a contender out there who wouldn't love to have him on their squad?
Or maybe you take issue.
Perhaps you just think he's healthy, and the fact that he's playing at a high level is a mere coincidence with the fact that his contract will soon expire?
KG is only human. He loves basketball, and wants to be paid as much as he can.
It's just too bad it takes a contract year for him to play like this on a consistent basis.
We could have used some MVP-level play a couple of years ago in game 7 of the Finals, a game where Old Number 5 tallied a grand total of 3 rebounds in 38 minutes, and the C's as a team surrendered 23 offensive rebounds that ultimately decided the outcome.
