Now an educated, but younger Celtics fan might ask, Les, you know, I watch these Celtics videos, and I'm struck by the fact that from 1984 to 1988, every time I look out on the floor I see the same 5 guys -- parish, mchale, bird, ainge, and DJ. What gives?
Ah, my son, you are observant indeed. Other than 1986, I think KC had a contractual limitation whereby he could only play the same five guys the whole game except for the last two minutes of the first quarter, and the last 60 seconds of the third quarter.
Otherwise, you know what?
You are right.
We saw those same five guys over and over and over again.
Good observation. Yes, KC overplayed his starters. 86 was better and he had a deep bench that season and he used them. But other than that, he ran the starters into the ground.
Doc has overplayed starters but never to the degree that KC did.
