The Boston Celtics staved off a furious comeback by the World Champion Los Angeles Lakers,  who outscored the home team by 14 points in the fourth quarter. Both teams boasted balanced attacks, with the Lakers posting six players in double figures, led by Jerry West with 21, while Boston posted 5 players in double figures, led by John Havlicek with 30 and Dave Cowens with 20. The defeat drops the Lakers to 1-1 on the season, while the Green remain a perfect 2-0.
