Auerbach Weighs in on the 1982-83 Celtics

Celtic genius, soothsayer and general manager Red Auerbach doesn't understand some the criticism his club has been taking.

"You win 11 of 13 and guys are taking pot shots at you," said Auerbach. "I can't understand it. The fact that Philly is ahead of us is a compliment to what they're doing."

On Celtics depth: "My philosophy as a coach always was that you get the 12 best players you can get. The name of the game is to win. It's unfortunate that some guys are going to be unhappy and grumbling and mumbling, but you can't help that."

Weighing in 14 pounds lighter than last time we saw him, Rick Robey worked out at the Garden late yesterday afternoon. Back spasms have caused Robey to miss eight of the last nine games, but he plans to practice today and dress for tomorrow afternoon's Laker game (Ch. 7, 1 o'clock). He also plans to drop eight or nine more pounds and get down to 238.

"The Doctor said that the less I weigh, the better it is for my back," Robey said. "I haven't been eating and I feel better than I've felt in a long time."

Cedric Maxwell (flu) returned last night, scoring two points and grabbing six rebounds in 16 minutes . . . L. Carr tried waving Gerald Henderson off the court when Henderson was sent in for Carr with 29 seconds left. Fitch won out and Henderson replaced Carr.
