MAXWELL AGREES TO PACT WITH CELTS

BOSTON - Veteran forward Cedric Maxwell, who became a free agent after he helped the Boston Celtics win their 15th NBA championship last June, signed a multiyear contract with the club yesterday on the eve of the season opener.

General manager Jan Volk announced that an agreement had been reached after extended negotiations with Maxwell, an exhibition-season holdout, and agent Ron Grinker.

No terms were announced. However, it was estimated that Maxwell settled for $800,000 a year.

The Celtics also announced that they had reached their 12-player limit by cutting their No. 1 and No. 2 draft picks, 6-7 Michael Young of Houston and 6-8 Ronnie Williams of Florida.

The signing of Maxwell left Young and Williams expendable. It also will enable 6-10 Kevin McHale to return to the sixth-man role - for which he was named best in the NBA last season - when Maxwell is ready to start with Larry Bird and Robert Parish.
