DJ, Wherefore Art Thou?

Dan Shaughnessy, Globe Staff

Dennis Johnson was a conspicuous absentee in the latter stages of Boston's 121-114 playoff victory over the Pistons last night.

DJ took only three shots and scored two points in 30 minutes. He played only 10 minutes in the second half and was on the pine for the final 7 minutes, 41 seconds, when the game was on the line.

Johnson has a sore middle finger on his right hand. Asked if the finger kept him out of the game, DJ replied, "I feel fine. You'll have to ask K.C."

Coach K.C. Jones said, "Ray (Williams) and Danny (Ainge) were going well, so they stayed in there."

Ainge finished with 25 points, his biggest offensive output since Feb. 1, when he had 26 vs. Kansas City. Ray-Ray made only three of 11 shots and almost wiped out the Channel 4 sports crew with a wild pass over Kevin McHale's head, but handed out six assists with five rebounds in 24 minutes.

M.L. Carr, who played in Detroit before coming to Boston, says he thinks the Celtics would be better off if Games 3 and 4 were being played in the Pontiac Silverdome instead of Joe Louis Arena. "Joe Louis helps them," says Carr. "I talked to Isiah (Thomas) about it, and he agrees. It'll be wild down there in the inner city."

Despite Carr's fears, Piston officials are worried about attendance for tomorrow night's Game 3. They'd sold less than 10,000 tickets as of yesterday and put some of the blame on the league. CBS would not allow the league to announce Detroit's home dates until Sunday - even though the pairings were set last Thursday night.
