CLIPPERS INTERESTED IN CORNBREAD (Dangling Bill Walton?)

SAN FRANCISCO

Los Angeles Clippers coach Don Chaney said his team is still interested in obtaining Cedric Maxwell and plans to supervise Maxwell's rehabilitation program.

"We agreed to that because we're still interested," said Chaney. "Nothing has been finalized or agreed upon . . . He's a competitive guy and he wants a fresh start. He wants to show everybody he can still play."

Meanwhile, Celtics president Red Auerbach and general manager Jan Volk said they had a productive meeting with Bill Walton last Friday and are still hopeful of working out a deal with the Clippers.

"We're working on it," said Auerbach. "It's something we want to do."

"It's a decision I'd like to be able to make," added Volk.

Are the Celtics worried about a front line with no legitimate small forward?

"Our coaching staff is not displeased with that type of lineup," said Volk. "But if it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out. We're not desperate about anything."

Celtics assistant coach Jimmy Rodgers said he hasn't talked with New Jersey officials, but he is still rumored to be high on the Nets' list of coaching candidates. They are also reportedly considering North Carolina State's Jim Valvano, Laker assistant Dave Wohl, Milwaukee scout Del Harris and former Pacer coach Jack McKinney. Lewis Schaffel, the Nets' executive vice president, would not discuss candidates and Volk said the Nets have not asked for permission to talk to Rodgers.
