Maxwell-for-Walton Still a Hot Topic
Rumors keep flying about the proposed Bill Walton-for- Cedric Maxwell trade, but all parties say there is still no deal.
Some
Knicks officials are telling people that the trade has been completed,
and one Celtics source said, "If it's going to happen, it'll happen in
the next day or two, or not for another month," but Celtics general
manager Jan Volk and Clippers president Alan Rothenberg yesterday denied
anything is imminent.
"There's nothing new, really,"
said Rothenberg. "I think we're all still interested in seeing if we can
do a deal, but the holdup is Cedric Maxwell's physical condition.
"There's
no secret deal. The Celtics are interested in Bill Walton and Walton is
very interested in the Celtics. If he's healthy, the Clippers are
probably interested in Maxwell."
Maxwell is in Los
Angeles undergoing rehabilitation for his left leg under the supervision
of Clippers team physician Tony Daly. Walton was given a physical by
Celtics team physician Thomas Silva in San Francisco Tuesday.
Volk
said, "It's been two days since I talked to Carl (Clippers GM Carl
Scheer). It's been on hold for a couple of days. It could be the kind of
thing that we both walk away from soon, or agree to table, or agree to
do. All the options are available, but it could be prolonged for a while
if it gets done."
In another Celtics-related matter,
New Jersey executive Lewis Schaffel met with Boston assistant coach
Jimmy Rodgers late Tuesday night. Nets president Bernie Mann said
earlier in the week that Rodgers is one of the three leading candidates
for the New Jersey coaching job, along with Lakers assistant Dave Wohl
and North Carolina State's Jim Valvano.
"We just had a
cordial conversation," Schaffel said. "I didn't speak to him about the
job at all. I've known Jimmy for 10 or 12 years and we were just
talking."
