The sting from the Game 7 loss to the Lakers is still making Danny Ainge's teeth rattle. It's difficult to shake the thought of what might have been and look forward to a draft that won't produce any superstars in green for perhaps years. But he has to. The Celtics president has to shift his thinking from the final six minutes last Thursday at Staples Center to the next two or three years. The draft is tonight, but Ainge has yet to address the media about prospects. His disenchantment with the entire process is a little harsh.

Grousbeck has Faith
September 19, 2010
If the Celtics had fallen in the first or second round of the playoffs, exhibiting a feeble effort from an aging team, the decision would have been easy. Instead, they sliced through the Heat, pounded the Cavaliers, and jumped to a 3-0 lead over the Magic before winning the Eastern Conference finals in six games. So a decision to dismantle the Big Three and rebuild wasn't so simple, and the painful Game 7 loss to the Lakers gave ownership even more reason to retain the core of the roster.

Doc's Returning
July 1, 2010
The chance for another shot at an NBA championship was too much for Doc Rivers to pass up
He spent the last two weeks wrestling with the decision to either step away from his job as coach of the Celtics, possibly the first sign of the end of the team's recent renaissance, or to return for another season with a group of players - future Hall of Famers and emerging All-Stars - that he knew he might never get the opportunity to coach again.

Big Three become Old Three as Era Nears Close

MIAMI - It was fun while it lasted.
They made the NBA relevant in our town once again, bringing back the pride and mystique of the golden days of Russell and Red. They reintroduced NBA America to the Celtics-Lakers rivalry that burned with Magic and Larry in the '80s. They won 234 regular-season games, got to the Finals twice, and broke a 22-year championship drought when they hung banner No. 17 in the rafters. The schooled us in Ubuntu. Anything was possible.

41-14 Celtics Trade Perkins for Green
February 25, 2011
DENVER - The Celtics overhauled their bench yesterday with a flurry of unexpected trades, the most prominent being a deal that sent popular workhorse center Kendrick Perkins to Oklahoma City along with guard Nate Robinson for small forward Jeff Green, center Nenad Krstic, and the Clippers' first-round pick in 2012, which the Thunder owned.

Truth Outduels Mamba Down the Stretch

LOS ANGELES - Kobe Bryant was going to try to do it by his lonesome, and on their way to a 109-96 win yesterday, the Celtics were more than willing to let him try. Bryant was piecing together his latest scoring binge, shot by difficult shot, dueling - in his mind, at least - with Paul Pierce, who was working on one of his own.

O'Neal Combo May Debut Tonight
December 25, 2010
ORLANDO, Fla. - The Celtics' plan when they signed Jermaine O'Neal and Shaquille O'Neal over the summer was to have two veteran giants at their disposal, choosing which of the 7-footers would start and which would be the reinforcement.
But Jermaine O'Neal has been out since Nov. 8 nursing a sore left knee, getting fitted for brace after brace. Shaquille O'Neal has missed nine games because of a bruised right calf. Yet both should be healthy enough to play today against the Magic, which means the Celtics finally will have their two biggest free agent additions on the floor at the same time for the first time since October

When Shaquille O'Neal stepped to the foul line for a pair of important shots with 4:33 remaining in last night's 84-80 victory over the 76ers, he received some coaching from Red Sox slugger David Ortiz. From his seat near the Celtics basket, Big Papi tried to give Big Shamrock some pointers by mimicking a shooting motion just before O'Neal took dead aim at the basket.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - When he looked at the halftime numbers, a part of Doc Rivers legitimately wanted to be upset.
The 38.9 percent shooting from the field
The 2-of-9 shooting from 3-point range
The fact that Paul Pierce and Ray Allen were a combined 1 for 11 from the field.
At points, it was frustrating to watch.

Celts' Bench Keys Rout
December 6, 2010
NEWARK - The Celtics were unexpectedly thin with Rajon Rondo sitting out with a bad hamstring, their lead over the Nets was a slim 2 points going into the second quarter yesterday, and Doc Rivers already had made the decision that he wasn't going to burn out his starters for a Sunday afternoon game against one of the league's worst teams. "I told our coaches, 'Put your seatbelt on, because we're resting guys,' " Rivers said. "Really, no matter what the score was, we had to give our guys a blow."

Shaq-Fueled Celts Start 16-4

In the Celtics locker room, the trainer's room is like the players lounge, with everyone passing through at some point. The Celtics have had more bodies on the table than they ever anticipated at this point, but they've still managed one of the best starts in the league.

Doc Rivers and Tom Thibodeau talk as much now, if not more, than they did when Thibodeau was Rivers's lead assistant in Boston, and when they chatted each other up before Thibodeau's Bulls came to TD Garden last night, the topic they couldn't stay away from was Kevin Garnett's rediscovered bounce.

Celtics Ride Rondo (12, 19, & 6) to Victory
December 4, 2010
When Celtics coach Doc Rivers saw Rajon Rondo go down in a heap with 4:54 remaining in the third quarter of last night's 104-92 victory over the Bulls, he naturally feared the worst. Rondo had been subjected to a hard foul by Carlos Boozer as he was cutting across the top of the key. When Rondo's left knee buckled as he hit the floor, the TD Garden sellout crowd held its collective breath as he reached for his knee.

CLEVELAND - The plan seemed brilliant. They always seem brilliant when you draw them up
Rajon Rondo didn't make the All-Star team because of lights-out shooting. Defenses don't exactly tremble when they see him pull up from 15 feet.

Squis and Baby Lead the Way
December 1, 2010
CLEVELAND - In a small way, last night's game against the Cavaliers was a test for the Celtics' second unit. It recently has been rocked by injuries - first to Jermaine O'Neal, then Delonte West - and whatever continuity it had developed disappeared the past few games as the starters built early leads and the reserves gave them away.

Shaquille O'Neal has a bucket list at age 38. He realizes the end is not only near, but fast approaching. If your name isn't Robert Parish or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, centers don't play well into their 40s, and O'Neal's worst nightmare is tarnishing his well-constructed image by playing too long.

Spry Shaq Simply Too Much
November 25, 2010
On a downer of a night in which the Celtics lost Delonte West for perhaps several weeks to a broken wrist, they depended on a man who had declared his team-carrying days were over
Shaquille O'Neal has been a pleasant surprise since arriving in Boston, hardly uttering a word of complaint about being mostly the fifth option in the team's offense. But with the rest of his teammates bumbling offensively like one of those "Three Stooges" marathons, O'Neal reached back to his past for some dominant moments.

Shaq: 2010-11 Celtics Best Team I've Played For
November 25, 2010
The Celtics did not have many contingency plans for their point guard crisis. No Rajon Rondo (hamstring) to start the game. No Delonte West (broken wrist) in the second half. Nate Robinson limited by foul trouble.
