ML Carr Shopping Pick

Antoine Walker's First Year in Green
6/20/1996

M.L. Carr is shopping. Anyone wishing to purchase the No. 9 pick in next week's NBA draft need only give him a call. Preferably, the call should come from someone with a higher pick.

Carr said he is ``actively shopping'' the pick, but added, ``Not that we don't like the position. We just want to get better.'' The logical shipping candidate is Eric Montross, who has been on and off the block since February. Four teams drafting ahead of the Celtics -- Philadelphia, Toronto, Milwaukee and Dallas -- have a demonstrative need for a center. Montross won't fetch the No. 1 pick, or the second, but the Bucks (No. 4) and the Mavericks (No. 6) might be interested if it involved switching picks.

The Celtics have brought in several players for workouts -- Kobe Bryant and Antoine Walker were there yesterday -- and Carr said the Celtics likely will pick someone from that group. They still are waiting to arrange an interview with Syracuse's John Wallace.

``We really do need to draft big,'' Carr said. ``We need to get bigger. We had to play Rick Fox at center this year.''

The acknowledged top four are Allen Iverson, Marcus Camby, Stephon Marbury and Ray Allen. The Celtics feel Walker should be in the top five, and if Shareef Abdur-Rahim comes back, he will be, too.
