The Mark Acres Chronicles

10/26/1987

1987-88 NBA Exhibition Season

The Celtics' defeated the New Jersey Nets 117-98 last night at the Centrum. It ceased to be a game and turned into a rout at the start of the fourth quarter when the Celtics took a 15-point lead, 85-70, and mortally wounded the Nets with a 10-point run. Jones opened the second quarter with a rather interesting lineup of Lewis, Mark Acres (6 points, 7 rebounds), Brad Lohaus (6 points, 3 rebounds), Greg Kite and Danny Ainge, who led all scorers with 18 points in 20 minutes. "That lineup was interesting, wasn't it?" said assistant coach Jimmy Rodgers. "Usually when you play a big lineup you sacrifice the ability to move the ball and run the floor, but they were all mobile and ran the floor well."

The interesting part of this series will be, as we head into the regular season, what kind of contribution did Mark Acres make?

I always thought of him as a stiff, slightly better than Greg Kite.

But now that we've witnessed another championship where the bench players didn't average big numbers, I'll be curious to see how often Mr. Acres puts up serviceable numbers of 6 and 6 or thereabouts.
