McHale Posts 21, 11, and 3 in 2 Quarters

1981-82 Boston Celtics

There are many nights when writers come to Bill Fitch, pens poised and notebooks opened, awaiting words of praise from Bill Fitch on the subject of Kevin McHale, only to hear a litany of the Gangly One's sins. Last night was an exception.

McHale had just demonstrated why he is such an awesome weapon. Playing only the second and fourth quarters, he racked up 21 points (8-for-11 shooting), 11 rebounds and three blocked shots as the Celtics bombed the Chicago Bulls, 115-93. Now here was Fitch saying that he didn't think McHale had gotten his statistical due.

"I'm going to raise a little hell with the stat man," Fitch stated, "because I think McHale had more than 11 rebounds. We'll watch the tape and count before tomorrow morning's practice."
