Sometimes my posts read like the rantings of a raving lunatic.
Last year every time Ray Allen had a game where he shot less than
50% from the field, I went off. This year, every time the bench scores
less than 20 points or posts negative +/- numbers, I lose my
bearings.

Over the past week, I've blown a gasket or two because the bench has been
in a slump. During the last four games, the bench has been a collective
-80.

Say it ain't so!

Well, I guess -80 over four games isn't so bad after I realized the
GREATEST BENCH IN NBA HISTORY posted a -55 against the Bucks last night.
This tells me maybe there is more to evaluating the effectiveness
of a bench than +/- numbers.

What is it?

My answer is simple:

Do the Celtics win and does the bench enable the starters to play 36 minutes or less?

Anyone have a problem with that equation?

Is this the lakers bench? I haven't watched them play this season but with all the hype I've been hearing about talent all the way to last man I thought they had multiple all-stars on there. Celtics bench I'm not too worried yet. It seems they play a fair bit against the other teams starters so as long as they play stifling D they should be fine.

Yes, the Lakers bench.

It's tough to walk out on your front step to get the paper in the morning without hearing how good they are.

You are right. I will now worry less, especially at 20-2.

Honestly I was looking at the boxscore saying to myself Vujacic Farmer Ariza aren't these the same people who were outplayed and outhustled in June? Mihm is still there for goodness sakes. Odom is so inconsistent I'm not even counting his presence as an upgrade. Unless Bynum coming back magically makes the bench better I'm confused.
I think the problem with our bench the past few games they were worried about their offense not clicking and let up on the defense. If they focus on the defense they can at last hold the lead if they can't extend it until the starters come back.
Hope its 22-2 by the week's end :)

Good points.

Our defense fuels our offense, and that is no less true on the second unit.

Ya think friday's game will be a little intense?

Byron "Celtics Hater" Scott and the return of James Posey?

Oh Posey I miss him so much I still believe he'd ultimately be more useful to the Celts than the Hornets. It'll be intense but if Rondo plays out of his mind and Perk gets double doubles like they did for the past few home games we should win comfortably. I'm more worried about the Wizards game to be honest.
Great blog by the way just discovered it and you've found a faithful reader

Yeah, the Wiz took 3/4 from us last year, though 2 of the 3 were after the 29-3 start and we were chillin.

Thanks for the compliment, Anon.

True hopefully we come away with a win. Looks like you're as amused by the lakers as I am you should read this story:

Outstanding!

I'm gonna use it for a post!!

n the training room, Derek Fisher, Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom were among the Lakers in must-see-TV mode. And when on those TVs referee Jim Clark made a questionable ruling that benefited the Boston Celtics, the groans and profanities spewed from the Lakers' mouths.

The Celtics were playing in Indiana, where the Lakers just lost Tuesday night, and they rallied to force overtime on Paul Pierce's 3-pointer. When regulation ended in that game, Sasha Vujacic walked out of the training room and into the main locker room, visibly upset and shaking his head.

Great! I look forward to reading it.
Not laker related but amusing Pacer fan on the importance of having multiple clutch shooters think I might add Eddie to Paul and Ray:
