Mutombo Unlikely, Smith Still a Possibility

Dikembe Mutombo said he’d be making a decision on a team soon, but the Celts may be holding off for someone with a more balanced game as they mainly see Mutombo as a contributor on the defensive end.

“No, I don’t think we’re going to get him,” said Rivers. “We talked to David (Falk, Mutombo’s agent) and I would say it’s a no."

Alonzo Mourning’s name is still being floated, but an even more intriguing property could be available soon. There is talk Oklahoma City may buy out Joe Smith’s contract, and that the club is at least serious about trading him.

Even if Doc followed my recommendation and started playing POB, and POB exceeded expectations, playing O'Bryant down the stretch and into the playoffs might not be the best to try and repeat.

With that in mind, Joe Smith tops my list at the moment. The problem with Smith is the idea that OKC would buy him out in December or January. That seems kind of early in the season to buy him out. Were the Thunder to wait until later in the season, the Celtics would be left hanging for longer than they might prefer.

On the trade side of the ledger, a deal for Joe Smith would solve a couple of problems, especially in a 2-1 or 3-1 scenario. It would clear some roster space, and eliminate some dead weight. Perhaps a package of Scalabrine and Giddens would get it done.

Mourning is intriguing. If he wants a another ring, and has anything left in the gas tank, Boston would be smart to give him a look, too. At 38-years-old, he's not only younger than Mutombo, he's got a wider array of offensive moves in his arsenal.

Alonzo already has a ring.

Yes he won with the Heat and he'll probably. I've seen Joe Smith in the last couple of OKC games and he looks like good offense and length off the bench but I don't know if he can be the backup center we need

I like the idea of Joe Smith. You never know what Mutombo can still give at his age and after having sat out for half a season. I would love to get PJ back. He already knows the system and it woudn't take as much to incorporate him. But, we need someone.

If he wants another ring...

I'm not sure we're thinking big enough. I'm thinking there could be one or two trades plus two or three acquisitions.
