Bird Rebounds against Hornets

1990-91 Boston Celtics
Remembering the 29-5 Start

The Milwaukee fans crowded courtside, anxious to pose a serious question. "Is Larry Bird hurt?" they asked Tuesday night. They were told he was fit, his ankles feeling as good as ever. "Then why isn't he shooting?" they asked. "How can the Celtics win if he doesn't shoot?"

Consider the question moot. After going 2 for 7 from the floor for 5 points in a 119-91 loss to Milwaukee, Bird rebounded last night with a season-high 45 points on 18-for-28 shooting in a 135-126 win over Charlotte. He also chipped in 8 rebounds, 8 assists and 5 blocks.

After the game, Bird said he made a conscious effort to get involved. His teammates said they concentrated on getting No. 33 the ball early. The result was a rousing offensive display that produced the first standing ovation of the young season.

"He's incredible," said rookie Dee Brown, who saw one of Bird's famed outbursts for the first time in person. "I've seen him hit shots like that on TV . . . it's incredible. The guy has 45 points and he has 8 assists, too. I hope people don't overlook the 8 assists."

Bird admitted he thought about his low output in Milwaukee before last night's game. "But there's nothing you can do about that, except make people forget it," he said.
Consider it forgotten.
