Give Kevin Gamble a little running room and a lot of playing time -- not to mention the presence of the less than gargantuan lineup presented by the Charlotte Hornets.

Then watch the numbers rise.

Ten-for-14 shooting in 43 minutes shuffling between the small forward and off guard positions with Reggie Lewis last night; 26 points, including the first 3 of the game and 9 in the last six minutes; plus nine assists.

Gamble was second in minutes and points to Larry Bird, who, according to coach Chris Ford, was "on another planet." But the contribution of a mere earthling, Gamble, was duly noted by Ford and Lewis.

"The combination of those two did a very good job," said Ford. "We were forced to go with that lineup because of matchup problems. Johnny Newman and Kelly Tripucka are quick off the ball, so we had to throw some different combinations at them."

In the process, said Ford after the 135-126 victory, "we got some good transition baskets from Lewis and Gamble and we forced them into bad matchups because Larry took advantage of the big guys guarding him."
