Tony Allen is only an "Average Defender"

Asked about defensive issues with Allen out, coach Doc Rivers said, “We just miss another guard, really. Honestly, Tony has been an average defender for us. I’ve always said he should be a great defender; he just hasn’t been yet, and that’s something he has to improve on. But we’re just down a guard.

Some guys thrive in a starting role.

Some guys thrive coming off the bench in a rotational role.

Other guys do best as an alternate to the rotational guys. This is Tony Allen. He does best when Doc can pick the match-ups, rather than be a guy Doc counts on every night.

The thing with Tony is that he has the tools and the potential to be an excellent defender but because of lack of confidence or focus or something just never seems able to turn the corner in his career.
