Jameer Nelson and Stephon Marbury

With Jameer Nelson sidelined by what might be a season-ending injury, the Web is rife with rumors about a possible Magic-Marbury hook-up. Makes sense to me. Steph needs the rock in his hand, and a starting spot with the Magic would give him that opportunity. Meanwhile, Doc is only offering him a supporting role off the bench.

But wait.

This just in from the Orlando Sentinel. Ok, it's really from last July, but it's still enlightening.

One thing Magic fans know about General Manager Otis Smith is that he's just as concerned how a player conducts himself off the court as he does on it. Almost to a fault. Under him, the Magic have yet to take a risk on a talented player who is also troubled with bouts of wackiness. "There'll be a time for that, but not now," Smith said. Translation: He won't do anything to upset the delicate locker room chemistry that surrounds young Dwight Howard. The Magic desperately need a point guard, maybe two, to back up Jameer Nelson. So asked if Smith had interest in the Pacers' Jamaal Tinsley or the Knicks' Stephon Marbury -- two moody, controversial players who might be bought out by their teams and available for a song -- he shook his head. "No, and no way. You know me," he said.
