Larry v. Magic: Game-by-Game Summary
Larry v. Magic: Game-by-Game Media Coverage
December 28, 1979
The NBA, too, made great financial inroads during the 1970s despite lagging ratings. Each franchise received $300,000 a year in 1970 from the television network carrying its games. But the league will get slightly more than $1 million this season. That invites speculation on the NBA early in the next decade. If CBS pulls out when the current contract expires in 1982, how will the clubs replace the million dollars? Will one or more of those teams that cannot survive go bankrupt, revealing at last deferred salary manipulation of athletes by owners and agents?
The NBA has so much at stake in Magic Johnson and Larry Bird revitalizing national television interest in the coming months. If these two great and colorful athletes do not boost the ratings, it may be lights out.
