Portland Throws Hat in the Garnett Sweepstakes

KG's Rookie Season
June 27, 1995

If 6-11, 217-pound Kevin Garnett, 19 and fresh out of high school in Chicago, is available when the Timberwolves pick fifth in Wednesday's draft, he will be the Wolves' choice.

But Garnett might not be available if Washington is willing to trade its No. 4 pick and Calbert Cheaney to Portland for the Blazers' 18th pick and Rod Strickland. With the fourth pick, Portland would take Garnett, meaning the Wolves would be stuck with North Carolina's Rasheed Wallace. What makes it more likely that Garnett will become a Timberwolf, though, is that Washington wants to unload Rex Chapman to Portland instead of Cheaney. And the Blazers don't want Chapman.
