This is one Laker fan who believes that Phil Jackson’s resume is still incomplete. Until PJ beats the C’s in the finals, he’ll remain number two in my book behind Pat Riley as greatest coach to ever helm the Laker ship. The rivalry between Boston and Los Angeles was re-born in 2008 when the Celtics took the hearts from the Lakers with a 39-point massacre as a punctuation point.
Maybe after Celtics' fans aging roster finally comes crashing down with that lone banner they hung in the rafters as consolation. You’ll be able to focus on more pressing issues like chanting “MVP” for Andrew Bynum in the Garden. As much as I hate the C’s, they enter my Laker consciousness about as often as Mike Smrek does these days. I'm gonna tell this bloke the same thing I tell Celtics fans. If you don't understand the yin and yang of celtics-lakers, then you ain't no fan of either team.
In fact, the writer contradicts himself by saying the only goal left for the Mistress is to beat the Cs. If that's the only measure for the season, then how can the green be far from anyone's thoughts in the land of Fakerdom???!!!
Why can't Laker fans understand that those were Laker fans in Boston chanting MVP for Kobe? This wasn't Rocky IV where the Russians start cheering for Balboa.
When you're down 17-15, 9-2, and you lost the last finals by 4, you cling to what you can.
This guy is a tool. Phil Jackson is a far superior coach to Pat Riley and Riley is one of the 10 best coaches ever.
I meant to say overall Jackson is far better than Riley but their Laker accomplishments are pretty even. That Laker writer is similar to other LA fans in foolishness.
Kid,
Other than rings, what makes PJ better?
The main thing that put Jackson over Riley is the rings. Riley won his original championships by walking into a team that had already won a championship. Jackson won his first 9 championships by taking over teams that had yet to win and were generally known as underachievers until he showed up.
I also think he's a better game manager and has had just a big impact on coaching strategies if not bigger. His beating Riley all those years in the 90's also puts him over Riley.
You make a decent argument. But I still like Riley of the 80s. He was a master motivator. I'm not sure they win 5 titles in the 80s without him.
I also note riles won a title with mia, and almost another one with NY
