Center Dave Cowens, citing constant foot problems which have reduced his jumping power to the point that he can no longer compete at the level he wishes, today announced his immediate retirement from the Boston Celtics.
"I have sprained my ankle at least 30 times over the duration of my career, broken both legs and fractured a foot," Cowens said. "Two years ago a team of foot and bone specialists said they were amazed that I could play up to that point without sustaining serious injuries.
"I am basically playing on one leg and my left ankle is so weak that I can best describe it as saying I have a sponge for an ankle," Cowens concluded.
Cowens was NBA co-rookie of the year in 1970-71 and MVP of the league in 1972-73.

I worry about players like Stiemsma who have foot problems early in their careers. You never know when it will be a recurring problem for them or when it's just isolated. Cowens was one of a kind though.
Yeah, we'll have to keep an eye on the steamship. Loved his effort.
