The Garnett Era Continues

Don't let the door hit in you in the ass on the way out, Ray.

The Celtics would have won in 2008 even without Ray Allen. Their record wouldn't have been as gaudy. The decisive game wouldn't have been as lopsided. But make no mistake, the Green would have brought home banner #17.

So as Ray Allen departs, it's time to reconsider the Celtics brand.

Out with the Big Three.

In with KG.

No, the C's wouldn't have won #17 without Paul Pierce. But at the end of the day, it was Kevin Garnett who turned this franchise around, by instilling a culture of hard work, dedication, perspiration, passion, and defense. Paul Pierce, while a genuine talent, had more issues prior to Garnett's arrivalthan I care to talk about. Interestingly enough, however, those issues disappeared with the arrival of the Ticket. So, yup, you guessed it. I'm giving #5 credit for the improved overall game of Paul Pierce.

We'll discuss this more as the summer unfolds.

For now, this isn't the end of the Big Three Era. That ended when Larry Bird retired.

As far as I'm concerned, the chapter of Celtics' history that began on July 31, 2007, was the Kevin Garnett Era.

And that Era continues into next season.

Ray walking was probably the best thing that could happen to the Celtics. We will no longer have to watch the team set 3 or 4 screens per possession to try to get Ray open. Both Lee and Terry can create their own shots and get themselves open.

Also, we will no longer have the hole in defense that Ray provided. He may have scored 20 but gave up 30 because he couldn't guard the proverbial chair.

It was nice to want Ray back for the sake of continuity and sentimentalism about the Big 3 era, but the Celtics are much, much better off without him.

Besides it give the Celtics even another reason to want to beat the Heat.
