Once the Los Angeles Lakers had signed Jodie Meeks to a two-year deal, the consensus was that the Lakers were done signing anymore players and were content with the roster. With Dwight Howard, Steve Nash and Antawn Jamison officially in the fold for the upcoming season along with Meeks and the recently re-signed Jordan Hill, few people believed that more moves were needed with the Lakers’ front office addressing needs off the bench and in the starting lineup.
Unfortunately, after a 0-6 start to the preseason, the bench appears to be just as weak if not worse than it was last season. Granted, Hill is injured and a lot of different players have been coming in and out of the rotation over the course of these six games, but the second unit still appears to need a lot of work moving forward. One player that was rumored to be in the Lakers’ crosshairs was former Sixth Man of the Year Leandro Barbosa. With Barbosa’s ties to Nash and mutual interest in signing with Los Angeles, the prospect of the veteran inking a deal with the Lakers seemed possible until the Boston Celtics came out of nowhere and signed him for the veteran’s minimum recently.
This move by the Celtics took everyone by surprise as it really didn’t make much sense after signing Courtney Lee and Jason Terry over the summer. Regardless of the crowded backcourt in Boston and the Lakers’ interest, Barbosa chose to sign with the Celtics and here’s his explanation for why he made the choice via Steve Bulpett of BostonHerald.com: “The Lakers were interested in me, but I think Boston would be better for me,” he said. “I don’t know why. My agent, we had that talk and he said it would be great for me to be here. It’s the kind of situation I’m looking for, especially to play with Rondo. He likes to run, and I love to run, so I think it will work really well.
“There were talks, a lot of talks of (the Lakers) and my agent. And I had a lot of talk with Steve (Nash). We are kind of close as friends. But nothing happened, so it happened here.” Obviously, the Lakers dropped the ball with Barbosa. All indications show that he was ready to sign for the veteran’s minimum, but the Lakers weren’t willing to jump at the opportunity. Even though the Lakers’ front office made quite a few brilliant moves during the off-season, the decision not to sign Barbosa may have proven to be costly with the bench currently being an absolute mess.

Lakers 0-6 in preseason. Mitch and the front office "dropped the ball." The purple's bench is an "absolute mess." Well, folks, there really isn't much more you can ask for coming out of La La land at this time of year. It's not quite as good as this. But it still puts a smile on this writer's face, especially after what Christopher Gasper was saying in the Globe.
Boston is not an NBA destination.
Dwight Howard would have had just as good a chance of lifting the Larry O'Brien
Trophy here as in Lakerland, but he would have rather donned his cape
for Brooklyn than Boston. That's all you need to know.
Traditionally
inept and incompetent franchises such as the Nets and Clippers are
regarded as more desirable "destinations" for today's NBA superstar
shopping for a new home than the sport's all-time winningest franchise.
Players
love the idea of playing for coach Doc Rivers, but they love warm
weather, low taxes, glitz, glamour, models, and iconic rapper owners
more than dear old Doc. Those players don't see the Celtics in the same
(spot) light as the Lakers, the Miami Heat, the Knicks, or the Dallas
Mavericks.
It's not a fair fight. The Celtics, who lead the
championship chase, 17-16, over the Lakers, can't reload at the same
rate and in the same way Los Angeles can, drawing stars to their
organization like tourists to the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
When the Celtics and Lakers meet Feb. 7 at TD Garden, they'll be on the same court, but they're not playing the same game.

I think you all know me pretty well by now.
It's not enough that the Celtics star is rising.
But even a week, a day, or a moment where the Celtics star is in ascent and that overlaps with the lakers star being in decline, well, damn, that is one my lucky days on this planet.
Despite my recent respect for riles, magic, and james, I still love to hate the purple...
A man after my own heart. It's a good day when the Celtics win and the Fakers lose. I have such a deep down hatred for all things Laker that I won't allow anything purple in my home and I've never eaten an eggplant.
