Alton Lister Already Out

September 20, 1996
Six weeks after signing Alton Lister to a one-year deal worth $ 500,000, the Celtics announced their soon-to-be-38-year-old center will miss half the season after undergoing shoulder surgery.

Is something missing here? Like an X-ray?

Yesterday M.L. Carr said that while the team was aware Lister had some shoulder discomfort, it was surprised to discover that the 7-foot center would need surgery. Lister underwent the operation Wednesday and will be out until at least the All-Star break.

"We knew Alton had had some trouble there," Carr said, "but obviously, I did not know that there was a spur. He was working out and it was continuing to get worse, so we had it examined. But he had some shoulder problems last year."

Carr said he was in no hurry to sign another body. The Celtics are over the salary cap and are not eligible to use the $ 1 million exemption, so any new signee must come on board for the minimum salary of $ 247,500.

Carr also said that he will change captains for next year, replacing Dee Brown with Rick Fox. The reason? Brown wants out and a captain shouldn't be asking for a trade. "I think it's pretty obvious that Dee is looking to get out," said Carr, "and a captain has to be a team leader, not someone who is looking to get out." Fox, incidentally, is eligible for free agency after this season. Attempts to reach Brown were unsuccessful, although it was learned he had been informed that a change was forthcoming . . . The Robert Parish/Bulls contract talks are almost concluded, and an agreement could come today. The Chief will sign a two-year deal out of the $ 1 million slot with the second year not guaranteed. However, the deal will call for Year No. 2 or parts of it (valued at $ 1.15 million) to be guaranteed if Parish meets certain specifications this season
