Celtics Sign Mundt

March 23, 1996
With their front line dropping like flies, the Celtics yesterday called for some help. Todd Mundt was only too happy to oblige.

Mundt, a 6-foot-11-inch center/forward, agreed to a 10-day contract and was scheduled to arrive in Boston late last night, well after the Nuggets game, and practice today.

Injuries to Dino Radja, Eric Montross (who was placed on the injured list) and Doug Smith made getting some frontcourt help imperative. How much Mundt can help is another matter. He played only 118 minutes over 24 games as a reserve for the Hawks this season. Atlanta released him two weeks ago.

Mundt has bounced around since coming out of Delta State three years ago. The Hawks had him in camp three years ago but released him at the start of the 1993-94 season. He then went to Rockford of the CBA.

Last season he was in the Bucks organization as a film coordinator. He went back to Atlanta, signing with the Hawks last October, and averaged 1.3 points a game.

Montross was among the most durable Celtics during his rookie season. But he is now on the injured list for the second time this year after spraining his left ankle during the 112-90 loss to Orlando Wednesday.

Montross missed five games early this season with a left calf injury. Alton Lister is set to replace him.

"This means we will have to go with experience at center," coach M.L. Carr said. "It also gives some opportunities to the younger guys. Junior Burrough and Eric Williams will get more time on the floor."

Rauf not on hand

Denver guard Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf missed last night's game with a sprained right ankle. He had been limited by a left foot injury and injured his right foot during Thursday's game at New Jersey, for which extra security was provided because he said he had received death threats over his controversial stand not to acknowledge the national anthem. He returned to Denver yesterday.
