Fab Melo is a Quick Learner

When you see Fab Melo dunk this weekend at the Bass Pro Tournament of Champions or show off his assortment of old-school post moves, his shot-blocking prowess and his infectious charisma, remember how quickly things have changed for the 7-foot center.

Freelance OK

He has swapped continents. He has dropped soccer for basketball. He has learned a new language.

Heck, even his name has changed or, at least, been tweaked.

Fab Melo Drops 30 Pounds, Continues to Evolve

After his freshman season, Fab Melo shed 30 pounds. At 244 pounds, he's leaner, quicker and his improvement is one of the keys to the season for the top-ranked Orange.

At 20-0, Syracuse is off to its best start ever headed into Saturday's 6 p.m. game at Notre Dame (11-9, 3-4 Big East).

"He is," Boeheim says, "one of the most improved players I've seen in a long time."

It's tough playing college basketball on the interior. Opponents grab your jersey, jostle you, plant a forearm in your back.

So don't blame Fab Melo for a little loose self-expression on Saturday. Don't blame the 7-foot Orange center for taking -- and making -- three jump shots in SU's win over Connecticut.

MELO DELIVERS FAB PERFORMANCE

A week ago this very day, Fab Melo approached Dion Waiters up there at the Melo Center, named for an altogether different guy, and made a declaration that in another time, place and circumstance might have inspired some interesting discussion.

It took Fab Melo 32 games, almost the entire season, to fully showcase the abilities that made him one of the top recruits in the nation last season.

To Syracuse's benefit, the 7-foot freshman center from Brazil couldn't have chosen a better day for his college coming out party.

Fab Melo: Expectations were High

Big East coaches selected him as the league's preseason rookie of the year. Pundits predicted he would dominate college basketball games. He was sold as a one-and-done phenom, a can't miss prospect. The hype for Fab Melo reached ridiculous proportions before he ever participated in a Syracuse University practice.

Fab Melo Remakes Body, Reinvents Self

Back in the fall, as he sat behind his office desk inside his magnificent on-campus compound being chatted up by a newspaper pest, Jim Boeheim made it abundantly clear that a brand new Fab Melo was about to be unveiled before the basketball public.

Fab Melo may be Just That

December 21, 2010

Monday's game in the Carrier Dome was 31 seconds old when Brandon Triche drove the lane and lofted up a floater. The ball rolled around the rim and into the waiting hands of Fab Melo, who converted the shot and was fouled on the play.

FAB LOVES DEFENSE

SU center Fab Melo blocked six shots in Wednesday's game against USF. Melo, who leads SU in blocks with 80, is second in the Big East to Louisville's Gorgui Dieng, who has 90.

But Melo seems as thrilled with the charges he draws as with the shots he blocks. He drew a big charge on USF's Ron Anderson with SU leading just 50-46. "I like to take a charge," Melo said. "They get a foul and we get the ball. Whatever gets the stop is great."
